Laminate wood floors are an excellent way to add beauty to the home. Although they look like hardwood, they are much less expensive.
Although they have a wood appearance, there is actually no solid wood in their composition. They are formed with layers made with wood residues such as wood shavings, sawdust, and wood chips. These materials and layers become bonded using high pressure. There is a photographic wood image on top. This top layer is coated for extra protection. Some higher grade laminate floors are almost impossible to distinguish from hardwood floors.
The low cost is one advantage of this type of flooring, but it is certainly not the only advantage. Many people love their easy installation. Most good handymen will have no problem with installation. One reason they are so easy to install is that they can be installed over most sub floors or other flooring surfaces. If replacing them in a room that previously was carpeted, however, make sure you remove all pads and carpeting. Laminate comes in an abundance of styles and colors. Fading will not occur even in rooms with a lot of sunlight. They are also very stain and scratch resistant.
Laminate floors are easy to maintain. A dust mop or vacuum with a soft brush can be used. If necessary, a damp mop can be used, but there should be no excessive water. The floor should be dried immediately if you decide to damp mop. Spills should be blotted up immediately. Also you should do no steam cleaning on these floors. The floor should not be waxed or polished. They will arrive with a finished look which cannot be changed.
Laminate flooring is very durable. It can last up to twenty-five years or longer. Although it does resist scratches, do not slide furniture across it, and put floor protectors under furniture.
It is not advisable to install these floors in basement areas or bathrooms. Both these areas could have water or moisture. An enclosed porch also not recommended for installation because of the possibility of moisture problems.
With laminate wood floors, you have the ability to have the look of hardwood without the high cost. They can be a great choice for homes on a budget.
