President’s Day is celebrated on February 20 to remember America’s presidents. Frequently the focus is on two presidents in American History, President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington though the holiday is intended to commemorate them all. Here are a couple of fun and easy craft ideas for kids to make to celebrate this uniquely American holiday.
Finger Puppets
Finger puppets are popular with kids and are so easy to make. These can be used right away. These American President finger puppets take advantage of the fact that there are various presidents faces on different American coins.
Items Needed
Penny
Quarter
Scotch tape
Construction paper
Scissors
Markers
1.Cut a square of construction paper so it is large enough to wrap around the index finger and long enough to stick up about 1 inch above the fingertip.
2.Lay the paper on a flat surface and place the penny in the center of the paper toward the top edge. Make sure Lincoln’s face is up on the penny. Tape in place.
3.Draw details of the body underneath the penny. This could be arms, legs or a body.
4.Wrap the paper around the index finger with the penny facing out and tape the paper closed in this tube shape.
5.Repeat this process and use a quarter to make a George Washington finger puppet. A nickel can also be used for a Thomas Jefferson puppet or a dime for a Franklin Delano Roosevelt puppet.
This easy craft can be repeated with small pictures of any president desired.
Edible Log Cabin
Abraham Lincoln is famous for growing up in a log cabin. This simple craft will allow kids to build their own edible cabin.
Items Needed
Pie tin
Pretzel Sticks
Peanut butter/ Chocolate icing
Graham cracker
1.Lay pretzel sticks down on a flat surface to form a cabin wall of the desired siae. Spread them with peanut butter or icing. Place more pretzel sticks across the peanut butter to form a wall with 2 layers of pretzel sticks. Repeat this process to make 3 more walls.
2.Lay about 5 pretzel sticks down on the work surface in the same way the pretzel sticks for the wall were placed. Spread peanut butter on one pretzel stick and lay it across the 5 pretzels toward the top so they are held in place. Repeat with a second pretzel stick and place it toward the bottom of the 5 pretzel sticks. This is the first section of the roof. Repeat to make the second section of roof.
3.Carefully spread a layer of peanut butter on the bottom of the pie tin. Place the first pretzel wall vertically in this peanut butter. Hold in place and put a second wall perpendicular to the first in the peanut butter so the walls lean on each other. Repeat with the third and fourth wall until the cabin body is complete.
4.Spread peanut butter across two opposite sides of the cabin body. Balance the roof sections so one end is atop this peanut butter and the other ends are leaning against each other. Spread more peanut butter as needed to hold in place.
5.Divide the graham cracker into sections and spread peanut button on one section. Press this piece of cracker onto one side of the cabin to make the door.
The log cabin is now finished. Kids can eat it or leave it up for decoration. They can also add other details such as windows, grass, trees and flowers to the pie tin to make a nice table centerpiece.
These are just two ideas for activities kids can do to celebrate presidents day.
